Gympie...?

"Gympie-gympie" is a tree.

From the Aboriginal word for a species of tree which has round leaves with a similar property to stinging nettle. It's approximate translation is "Devil". A great name for a town!

About Our Area

Cooloola Shire of Queensland, Australia, is home for the Heart of Gold International Film Festival. Our rural town, Gympie, is a beautiful place, close to the stunning Fraser coast with its whale watching, fishing, boating and miles of drivable beaches. Alongside is some of the most enchanting Hinterland in the region, featuring everything from olive groves to wineries.

Gympie is the town that saved Queensland when gold was discovered here (and this was one of the influences for the name of the festival) and has a rich history in more ways than one.

Out of this richness comes a festival full of films that have a heart of gold.
